Along the Seas and Lands of Far East

По морям и землям Дальнего Востока

Russian Far East is the largest of 8 Federal districts (Federal Subjects groups) of Russian Federation. It contains 9 Federal Subjects from total 85 of Russian Federation.*    Our route included 3 of them:

- Primorsky Krai: its capital Vladivostok, ports Nakhodka and Vostochny; Olga Bay; Popov Island

-   Sakhalin Oblast (its capital Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and port Korsakov) Oblast includes also Kuril Islands (Severo-Kurilsk  on the island of Paramushir)

-   Kamchatka Krai (its capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky,  Russian Bay;

More than 25 ethnic groups inhabit the Russian Far East, among them Koryaks, Tungus, Chukchi, Yakuts, and Kamchatkans.

Our sea route passed through Sea of Japan; La Pérouse Strait, named after French seafarer;  Sea of Okhotsk; Kamchatsky Strait and Pacific Ocean

While in a route the infamous incident with the Korean plane happened on September 1 1983. At that time we were approximately in 200 km from the crash site. Officials from the United States and Soviet Union eventually agreed that the pilots innocently flew off course and the Soviets, with good reason to believe that it was a spy plane, shot it down without knowing that it was a passenger plane. But, it were and now are a lot of theories about this tragically event.

A helicopter tour to the Valley of Geysers  **

Back to Summer 1983

*According to constitution of Russian Federation: Every subject of the Russian Federation has own governor (executive branch), regional parliament (legislative branch) and regional constitutional/charter court (higher judicial branch in a region). Federal subjects shall have their own constitution/charter and legislation (adopted by regional parliaments). Federal subjects should not be confused with the eight Federal districts which are not subdivisions of Russia, are much larger and each includes many federal subjects.

** We could not afford this tour in 1983, it is here for information.
