From my diary: In the morning we entered the Russian Bay. Everything is unusual: a closed cove, surrounded by mountains with snowy peaks, on the beach - beautiful vegetation. We disembarked and spent the whole day on the beach. At that time a frontier post was at the Russian Bay because all the Far Eastern coast was considered a border zone. A frontier post finally disbanded in 2011. Above the bay, in the hills, at an altitude of about 600 meters there is a lake of a great beauty. The water of this lake is unique because of high silver content. This day was very wet, and we were soaked through. We had to dry off around the campfire. In the evening we enjoyed the sunset already from the ship Rocks "Three Brothers". This is a unique, created by nature itself breakwater that protects the Avacha bay from stormy ocean waves. View of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky center from the ship in 1983 View of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky center now. I do not like this new skyscraper, which spoils the whole view In 1779 ships of the third British around-the-world expedition of Captain Cook entered the Avacha Bay. Charles Clarke was a close associate of Cook and led the third expedition after Cook's tragical death. Clarke died of pulmonary tuberculosis in an expedition near the coast of Kamchatka. According to his last wishes, he was buried in the village Paratunka. In 1914 representatives of the British Admiralty Board established in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky a monument to Charles Clark in honor of the third British around-the-world expedition of Captain James Cook. Monument of the XVIII century French navigator La Perouse (La-Perouse) erected in honor of the visit in the harbor of Petropavlovsk in 1787 La Perouse's expedition around the world. La Perouse's expedition ended tragically, wrecks of his ships were discovered on the Vanikoro island (Solomon Islands to the east of Papua New Guinea). There are a lot of legends about the fate of La Perouse, one of which Jules Verne told by the mouth of Captain Nemo, when Nautilus reached the shore of the Vanikoro island. The monument was erected in 1827 in honor of the Russian explorer Vitus Bering - Kamchatka expedition leader and founder of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in 1740 Vitus Jonassen Bering was a Danish explorer and officer in the Russian Navy. He is known for his two explorations of the north-eastern coast of the Asian continent and from there the western coast on the North American continent He was a Russian sailor and admiral, descending from German nobles. He was the head of the first Russian round-the-world expedition in 1803 – 1806. Expedition turned special attention to the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kuril Islands and the Sakhalin Our route from Russian Bay to Avacha cove We sailed in Avacha Bay along the coast of Kamchatka.
