Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, was a Russian physician,dramaturge
and author who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in historyIn 1890, Chekhov undertook a journey by train, horse-drawn carriage, and river steamer to the far east of Russia and the katorga, or penal colony, on Sakhalin Island, where he spent three months interviewing thousands of convicts and settlers for a census. Sakhalin Regional Museum Housed in the former Japanese building dating back to 1937, the museum hosts exhibitions about the islands natural and climatic features, as well as the history of Sakhalin and a quite good ethnographic collection of the island's indigenous peoples.
